For years the rule was simple: shades were formulated for someone else, and ours arrived late — if they arrived at all. Foundation that oxidised orange. Concealer that flashed grey under the eyes. Skin tints that stopped at “medium.” Blush and highlighter that vanished on deeper skin. Lip nudes that turned ashy instead of warm. From base to lips, our whole face was an afterthought.
Brown girls learned to mix, to settle, to make it work. We were tired of making it work.
